Scholarships

As one of a number of activities, the Mineworkers Trust grants scholarships each year to promising students from the families of mining and energy workers. Here is what one of this year's winners says about the scholarship:

I am proud to come from a family with a long line of coal miners who have experienced the highs and lows of the industry.

My great-grandfather, Alexander Parkinson, tragically died in a mine disaster due to a gas burst in Collinsville in October 1954.

My grandfather, Eric Skellen, worked at the No.2 mine in Collinsville and my Dad, Peter Purdie, works as a Deputy at North Goonyella.

As a youngster I have supported the Union through many campaigns including WorkChoices, and have taken part in many of the Labour/May Day rallies and festivities.

With the wonderful Union support I have received I will make sure I grab the opportunity to study hard and like my family before me, contribute to the well being of our great communities.
