Industrial action at Port Kembla Coal Terminal on hold

Workers taking on-going protected industrial action at the Port Kembla Coal Terminal are buoyed by progress made during negotiations today, the CFMEU Miners Union said.

Movement on key areas of dispute has led the union to call off a planned 24-hour stoppage scheduled for tomorrow.

Progressing negotiations today between workers, represented by the CFMEU, and PKCT management gave workers hope of resolving outstanding issues without further industrial action, said CFMEU District Vice President Bob Timbs.

Refinery shutdown threat compounds fuel security risk

NSW would be left with no oil refining capability and national fuel security would be jeopardised if Caltex shuts down its Australian refineries, the CFMEU Mining and Energy Division said today.

Caltex has flagged closing its refineries in Sydney and Brisbane, following on from Shell’s announcement last year it plans to close its refinery at Clyde.

Five hundred jobs are to be lost from Shell’s Clyde operation, exacerbated by the potential 800 job losses if Caltex goes ahead and shuts its refineries.

Boom should deliver better jobs, not worse: BHP coalmine workers begin seven-day strike

Wednesday 15 February 2012

Over 3,500 Central Queensland coalmine workers begin a seven-day strike at midday today to uphold safety and working conditions in the booming mining industry, said the CFMEU Miners Union.

The workers from seven BHP-operated mines across the Bowen Basin are striking after trying to negotiate a new workplace deal for 15 months.

BHP is expanding its Central Queensland operations off the back of record profits, while trying to drive down conditions for local workers, said CFMEU National President Tony Maher.
